This program is designed to reinforce skills taught in previous preschool experiences and to teach more advanced concepts in reading and math readiness, science and social studies, art and music, and to work with perceptual motor skills.

The purpose of this program is to give children an opportunity to mature physically, socially and emotionally before entering public kindergarten.

Course Description

§ Reading Readiness is divided into two parts. The first gives practice in following oral directions, visual discrimination, auditory discrimination, and gross motor skills. The second part gives instruction in recognizing, tracing, and copying letters of the alphabet, and auditory discrimination of initial consonant sounds.

§ Math Readiness introduces students to geometric shapes, sets, comparisons of sets, numerals 1 through 10, number concepts, ordinal number words, simple measurements; and identification of coins.

§ In Science units taught may include seasons, plants, solar system, trees and other living things, the five senses, dinosaurs, rain forests, the body, insects, weather, and the ocean (varies with class).

§ Holiday Themes are used to structure the social studies program, which includes learning about ourselves and families and visits with members of our community.

§ In Music there is work with rhythm and singing.

§ Art emphasizes experimentation and creativity as well as following directions to complete specific crafts. In the spring, the class will hold an art display at the Monroeville Public Library.

§ Physical Activities include playing on outside play equipment, riding bikes and other wheeled toys, games, bouncing and catching balls, and work with balance and other perceptual motor skills.
The program is unhurried. No specific level of achievement is required and peer comparisons are not made. Each student's progress will be reported in January and May.

This program is for children who will be 5 years old before January of the current school year. Children must also have completed our three year old preschool program and be recommended by the teacher or have completed our four year old preschool program.
